Hands Up. Don’t Shoot. Pray.

mike-brown

O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy:

For Mike Brown, we pray he is at peace with the Savior.

For Mike’s family and friends, we pray Your presence is with them in those who stand beside them.

For People of Color, we pray their oppression will cease. That You will defend them, answer their cries, and redeem them with Your mighty hand and outstretched arm.

For those of us in places of privilege, we pray for forgiveness and humility. We promise to end the oppression, beginning with ourselves:

By recognizing our complicity in oppression through our own blindness and deafness to the reality of racism.

By hearing and seeing those whom we have previously ignored.

By standing with them in solidarity.

By being like Jesus and causing a scene when injustice goes unchecked.

For the police on scene, we pray they would turn their guns away from innocent protestors. That they would know the things that make for peace. That they would put down their weapons, put up their hands, and strip the empire of its power to oppress.

For Your household, the Church, keep us in your steadfast faith and love, that through Your grace each of us may proclaim your truth with boldness, and minister your justice with compassion; for the sake of our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.1

Amen.
